Thoughts from @Eurogamer_Expo – an early look at X-COM Enemy Unknown by @TheRealRidge #EGXP

It’s been the Eurogamer Expo this weekend and Xbox gamer, @TheRealRidge has been checking out games so I don’t have to.

He’s sent on his thoughts on X-COM Enemy Unknown, and will be following on with his thoughts on the previews of Far Cry 3, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Doom 3 BFG Edition in 3D, and “an indie game that looked an awful lot like Canabalt.”

Check out his thoughts on X-COM below:

Graphically quite a good game and it seems like they’ve streamlined the system since the original version of the game. Not only have they made it more accessible for newcomers to the game but they also put it in such a way that for older gamers it will still be an enjoyable experience. The graphics were good, giving it a style reminiscent of Team Fortress 2, whilst adding in small segments of action when one of your team kicks a door open or smashes through a window. Sometimes just charging forward into cover executes one of the close-ups. But they never detract from the experience you’re involved in. I’d have to say the tutorial/opening level feels a tad long in that it retreads similar instructions at least twice for all four members of your team before it gets to the combat part of the segment. Overall very fluid and a nice touch they’ve made to the game by updating it. Given that the game is out in two weeks my guess would be this was the finished article.

One gripe and my second of this article came from watching somebody else play. There was a part where an enemy was outside a window and one of your guys was inside. After initiating the combat and the firing began, the shooting went straight forward when the enemies head was ducked down to the left. Which unfortunately given the release date (12th October), makes it seem unlikely to see a fix. If it warrants one, some may say not and I’d agree. It was a slight gripe but one I can live with.

I’ll post up his thoughts on the previews of Far Cry 3, Aliens Colonial Marines and Doom 3: BFG Edition in 3D as they come through. Sounds like X-COM lives up to the original at least.
